Reasons For Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are also known as the third set of molars. Located in the very back of the mouth, they are typically the last teeth to erupt. Wisdom teeth are not necessary for a healthy bite and tend to cause more trouble than anything. Due to this, wisdom teeth are often removed as a preventative measure, but other reasons include:

  • Impaction: Wisdom teeth can become impacted – or trapped – under the gums or jawbone. This causes pain, swelling, and potential damage to the surrounding teeth.
  • Infection: As wisdom teeth begin to erupt, pockets can form that trap food and bacteria. Trapped germs in the mouth are prime locations for infectio ns, inflammation, and periodontal disease.
  • Crowding: Often, when wisdom teeth come in, there isn’t enough space for them to grow. If they remain, they can push against other teeth and cause shifting and alignment issues amongst the rest of your teeth.
  • Decay: Due to their location, wisdom teeth are more difficult to reach and therefore to clean than other teeth. That means they are more prone to cavities and decay.
  • Pain: Wisdom teeth often cause discomfort, pain, or pressure in the gums, jaw, or neighboring teeth.

What To Expect During Wisdom Teeth Removal

Consultation

To begin the process of potential wisdom teeth removal, schedule a consultation with Prosper Wisdom Teeth and Implants by calling 469-296-8757. Your initial appointment will consist of an exam where we will use X-rays to determine the position of your wisdom teeth. A detailed explanation of the process will be provided, and a treatment plan will be determined.

Procedure

The procedure will begin with your choice of anesthesia administered to make sure you’re comfortable throughout the surgery. To remove the teeth, Dr. Graves will make a small incision in the gums to remove the tooth. Once removed, the area will be thoroughly cleaned and stitches will be placed to aid in healing.

Recovery

After your procedure, some swelling and discomfort are to be expected for a few days to a week. There are important steps you can take to make yourself more comfortable and speed up healing.

  • On the day of the procedure, bite down on gauze to control bleeding.
  • Use over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication to control pain.
  • Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling.
  • Stick to a diet of soft foods and liquids.
  • Avoid straws or other suction that can cause complications.
  • Gently rinse with salt water.
  • Be careful when brushing your teeth, avoiding the surgical site for the first couple of days.
  • Get some rest! Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 2-3 days.
  • If needed, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to monitor healing or remove stitches.
